Women at Amelia Island Doing Double Duty
Due to a washout of nearly an entire round of tennis, many
of the women were forced to play 2 matches each to get the
tournament back on schedule.
Lindsay Davenport, playing Venus Williams
for the 26th time, took the match in 3 sets after dropping
the first set 6-1.
Also winning two on Friday to get to the semifinals were
No. 7-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova (d. (11)
Jankovic, and (15) Asagoe in three), and (12) Silvia
Farina Elia (d. (8) Schnyder, (2) Serena). Serena
won the first set over Farina Elia and held three match points
in the second-set tiebreak before losing the tiebreak and
retiring with a sprained ankle.
Unseeded Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano also
won two matches on Friday, ousting No. 13 seed Ai Sugiyama,
then upsetting No. 6-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva
in straight sets.
